NEW YEAR - NEW ME


Everywhere you look at the moment people are making resolutions, promising to commit to dry January, veganuary or boot camp memberships.

We were given 3 bottles of gin and a dozen bottles of wine this Christmas, we are also visiting the South African wine region later this month so dry January isn’t going to happen. Although I am keen to eat more vegetarian food, I really love bacon and the occasional steak so veganaury isn’t going to happen either.

Fitness wise yoga is my thing and yes, I should be doing more but a bootcamp where someone shouts at me to get fit isn’t my idea of fun.

But....

Before Christmas two things happened that got me thinking of resolutions - Firstly, I visited the Forest Wholesale Foods who have recently moved to Christchurch, the business was set up by a young family determined to find a way to sell quality whole food products that don’t break the bank.

It was lovely to hear how starting an online business from home with little room for the growing family let alone large bags containing whole foods has now grown and moved (twice) into bigger premises. Although the owners Josie and Kingsley are predominately an online business if you live locally you can go and collect your goods from their warehouse.

The company has gone from strength to strength and now have a huge range of products are available at much more competitive prices than the high street health food shops.

Products include:

Nuts, seeds, beans and pulses, grains and pasta, powders, herbs and spices, dried fruit, sprouting, and the Faith in nature hair and body care range.

Back to my New Years resolution, I’m a menopausal woman and with that comes all kinds of unexpected health related issues ranging from the hot flushes, mood swings, brain fog, and sleepless nights. So I have decided to take action by eating slightly differently this year, researching how I can feel better by exercising and trying new foods that promote the vitamins etc that I’m lacking. Josie from Forest Wholefoods is a trained nutritionist and has said she will give me some tips on what can help and some ideas on cooking things I've never used before.

The website not only serves as an online shop but has a useful blog with recipes and articles well worth a read if you are new to the whole food world. New customers get a 5% discount on their first order.

This was my first Goji berry tea using my strainer from The Gilded Teapot in Lymington. It was very sweet maybe next time I will use less berries.

Research suggests that similar to the benefits you get from eating other berries, goji berries are loaded with beta-carotene (a pigment found in plants and fruits) which helps promote healthy skin.

Goji berries have also been known to help boost the immune system and protect the eyes. And like other berries, goji berries are also an excellent source of vitamin C and can reduce tough cold symptoms. They are low in calories, fat-free and are packed with fibre — which also helps you manage weight and go the bathroom on a regular basis. So I'm giving them a go, I even tried some in my overnight oats yesterday.
