Unveiling the Serene World of Summerdown Mint

Welcome, mint enthusiasts! Today, we embark on an aromatic journey through the verdant fields of Summerdown Mint, where nature's essence is distilled into fragrant treasures that delight the senses.

Black Mitcham Peppermint has been grown on the Summerdown Estate for almost three decades and last week I went to find out more.

I booked an afternoon on the Summerdown Essential Oils Aromatherapy Experience based on the Summerdown Estate not too far from Basingstoke. Starting with a quick cup of tea and introductions to staff and the others participants we then walked through the picturesque grounds of Summerdown Mint, passing fields of lavender, creating a carpet of purple haze as far as the eye can see.

A Glimpse into Farming and Distilling

Next we walked across the fields to find out about the distillation process from 'Master of Mint' Ian Margetts, we passed a swarm of bees on the way - having only seen small batch botanical distillation (for gin) this was on another level! Three machines this size can be working on different products at any one time, incredibly, the staff have apparently become immune to the intoxicating smell.

Then on to the fields full of Black Mitcham Mint which smelt incredible, the slightest touch to the underside of the leaf creates an intense fragrance. The original plants were sourced in America over 25 years ago and now every plant growing on the 100 acre farm is related to those first plants.

The mint is now used to make a selection of wonderful products that include award-winning chocolates, teas, candles and diffusers not forgetting a particularly lush hand wash that smells like you have washed your hands in a freshly made Mojito.

Aromatherapy expert Shelley Baker joined us on the tour and explained the importance of natural products especially when it comes to healing both the mind and body. The icing on the cake (figaratively speaking) was learning how to make a foot soak of healing salts and essentail oils, then meditating whilst sitting in a beautiful daisy field.

Believe me none of us wanted to wake up!
